The amazing Australian event at Eastern Creek, the Barry Sheene Festival of Speed has had a few suprises in store for us here in the Carl Cox Motorsport garages, but all in all its been an incredible experience to be part of this event with some magical results....
This event is held every year as a tribute to legendary rider Barry Sheene, and not only hosts the top post classic Solo and sidecar teams from Australia and NZ, but also is fortunate enough to tempt such GP legends as Freddie Spence,Kevin Schwantz,Kevin Magee and Graeme Crosby to name but a few.
The weekend was the first time the Carl Cox Motorsport brand had multiple teams from different styles of motorsport competing at the same event, with the Australian historic team and rider Dean Oughtred finally sharing the same garage space with New Zealand based Colin Buckley/Robbie Shorter on board the Formula 1 sidecar.
After succesful practice sessions on Thurs and Qualifying/ Race 1 on Friday the team had a late night working on a gearbox issue on Dean's GSXR1100 till around 2am on Friday night, and we were hoping the fix would hold off for the long weekend of racing- it behaved for most of the sessions but caused 1 DNS early on Saturday morning. Dean's other bike, the Honda CR750 ran flawlessly until the final race on Sunday for the Ken Wootton trophy when an issue saw Dean having to retire while fighting for front honours.
Overall though, the Australian based solo bikes from the Coxy stable finished 1st overall in Period 4 Unlimited, 1st overall in the Barry Sheene Trophy and Period 6 Unlimited, a great result considering the races dropped through bike issues, and Dean rode amazingly in varying conditions over the whole weekend:))
The F1 sidecar ran beautifully, and after qualifying on pole the team took convincing leads in the early stages of each race and secured a clean sweep of 5 wins from 5 starts from pole position, along with setting a new lap record for the Eastern Creek circuit 3 times over the weekend.
This also means the team is now also leading the Australian F1 championship until the next round is held in November this year, along with the Trans-Tasman championship which will be decided at the NZ sister round of the Barry Sheene event to be held back on the other side of the Tasman in October.
This event has been absolutely spectacular is every respect, and we'd like to thank the tireless efforts of not just the teams and GP legends that have travelled from afar to be part of the meeting, but also the fine folk that have helped make it so enjoyable for all those in attendance.
We'll be compiling a heap of pics, short videos and candid moments from the weekend over the coming days, and are now in full swing for our upcoming events as we finalise the last details for our sidecar crew to head back to the Isle of Man TT in just ten weeks time...
Thanks also to those that made it possible for both our teams to get together over these last few days, and the people that took the time to come by the pits and say hello(and even try the sidecar on for size...;)
Hope to see you all again at the next one!
Carl Cox Motorsport.
