The last two weeks incorporating the first two rounds of the NZ Superbike championship started off well for our sidecar boys with qulaifying on pole leading into race 1- unfortunately during the first race of the season a sudden loss of grip caused the F1 bike to spin then turn upside down, resulting in Robbie parting company with the platform and Barry taking the brunt of the impact with his shoulder. He's currently out of action with a broken collarbone requiring several procedures over the next few months to get him back to full health.
Although still awarded 2nd for the race with the red flag,we were unable to continue with the remaining 4 races that weekend, and in order to compete in the upcoming events both in NZ and overseas we have enlisted the support of ex NZ champion Colin Buckley.
Colin has not only won the NZ title 3 times, but also competed at the IOM TT not once but FOUR times, and is the last man to win a competitive sidecar race at the infamous Bathurst circuit- and even tho the last time he was on a sidecar was 12 years ago, he definately proved that once a racer, always a racer!
After some very minor setup changes to the F1, the boys managed to qualify 3rd for the start to race one, and battled for third place in their first outing before a spin on the bike leading the race forced us to settle for 4th.
Sunday arrived, conditions were hot and sunny- and we're happy to report that the guys absolutely rocked with some spectacular racing, managing 2 wins from 2 starts, complete with a new lap record!! A fantastic finish to the weekend means second overall for the meeting, a brilliant result all things considered:)
We'd like to thank everyone for the support over the last few weeks with both the kind wishes for Barry's recovery, and welcoming Colin to the team for the coming season!
